Job Summary:
The Design Engineer – Process (Water Systems) is responsible for the conceptual, basic, and detailed process design of water and wastewater treatment plants. The role involves developing process flow diagrams, mass and energy balances, equipment sizing, and technical documentation to ensure efficient, safe, and compliant system designs.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Process Design & Engineering
- Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for water and wastewater treatment systems.
- Prepare mass and energy balance calculations.
- Select and size key process equipment (e.g., clarifiers, filters, RO membranes, pumps, blowers, chemical dosing systems).
- Design and evaluate unit operations such as filtration, sedimentation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, UF/MF, AOP, etc.
- Perform hydraulic calculations and develop process design basis documents.
2. Technical Documentation & Support
- Prepare technical data sheets, equipment specifications, and control philosophy documents.
- Provide process inputs for layout, piping, and instrumentation teams.
- Support procurement in technical evaluation of vendor offers.
- Review and approve vendor drawings and documents for process compliance.
3. Project Execution
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, civil, and automation teams to ensure integration of process requirements.
- Support commissioning and performance testing by providing design intent and troubleshooting guidance.
- Conduct process optimization and troubleshooting during plant start-up and operation.
4. Compliance & Standards
- Ensure designs comply with relevant national and international standards (e.g., ISO, EPA, BIS, WHO, ASME).
- Incorporate HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) and sustainability principles into process design.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of water chemistry and treatment processes (RO, UF, EDI, softening, clarification, biological treatment).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, AVEVA / SmartPlant, or equivalent design software.
- Understanding of control systems (PLC/SCADA) for process automation.
- Analytical skills to interpret laboratory and field data for design validation.
- Strong report writing and documentation skills.
Qualifications & Experience:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Chemical, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering.
- 10 –15 years of experience in process design or project engineering in the water and wastewater treatment industry.
- Experience with industrial (ZLD, ETP, RO/DM plants) or municipal water treatment projects preferred.
Performance Indicators:
- Accuracy and completeness of design deliverables.
- Timely submission of process documents as per project schedule.
- Compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Effectiveness of design during commissioning and operation.
