Job overview :

 

The Process Engineer (SCADA) is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and optimized operation of water and wastewater treatment facilities. The role focuses on process monitoring, troubleshooting, optimization, and digital performance tracking to maintain treated water quality, minimize operating costs, and ensure compliance with contractual and statutory requirements.

The incumbent will lead process stabilization, performance monitoring, mass balance analysis, chemical dosing optimization, membrane performance evaluation, and energy conservation initiatives across systems such as ETP, STP, WTP, RO, EDI, ZLD, and Ultra-Pure Water (UPW) facilities. Integration with SCADA/PLC systems for digital monitoring, reporting, and continuous improvement is a key expectation.

 

Responsibilities :

 

A. Plant Process Operations

 

  • Monitor and optimize operations of:
    • Water Treatment Systems: Clarifiers, PSF, ACF, Softeners, UF, RO, EDI, UV, Mixed Bed Filters
    • Wastewater Systems: Equalization, Neutralization, Flash Mixers, Clarifiers, DAF, ASP, MBBR, MBR, SBR
    • Sludge & ZLD Systems: Sludge handling, UF, RO, Brine Concentrators, MEE, ATFD, Crystallizers
    • UPW Systems: Degasifiers, EDI, UV-TOC, Final Filters, Distribution Loops
  • Ensure operation within design and contractual limits

B. Process Monitoring & Performance Evaluation

 

  • Analyze flow parameters: feed, product, reject, recycle
  • Monitor key water quality parameters:
    • Physical: pH, turbidity, temperature, TSS, conductivity, resistivity, SDI
    • Chemical: TDS, hardness, alkalinity, chlorides, sulphates, silica, TOC, COD, BOD, etc.
    • Biological: MLSS, MLVSS, SVI, DO, F/M ratio, SRT, OUR, SOUR
  • Identify deviations and initiate corrective actions

C. Membrane Performance Monitoring

 

  • Track UF, RO, MBR, and EDI system performance (pressure, flux, recovery, rejection, permeability)
  • Identify fouling/scaling trends and recommend CIP schedules

D. Process Optimization

 

  • Optimize:
    • Chemical dosing (coagulants, antiscalants, acids, caustic, nutrients)
    • Energy usage (blowers, pumps, compressors, membranes)
  • Improve process parameters such as DO, sludge age, aeration, and flux
  • Drive reduction in chemical consumption, power usage, sludge generation, and OPEX

E. Laboratory Data Review

 

  • Validate lab results (COD, BOD, MLSS, SDI, conductivity, TOC, silica, etc.)
  • Recommend process corrections based on analytical data

F. Root Cause Analysis & Troubleshooting

 

  • Investigate system issues across RO, biological, ZLD, and UPW systems
  • Perform RCA, FMEA, CAPA implementation
  • Resolve issues like membrane fouling, sludge bulking, scaling, and process instability

G. Chemical & Mass Balance Calculations

 

  • Prepare water, mass, salt, sludge, and chemical balances
  • Evaluate system efficiencies (recovery, rejection, specific consumption)
  • Generate improvement recommendations

H. Performance Guarantee Monitoring

  • Track KPIs: plant uptime, water quality, recovery, chemical & energy consumption
  • Monitor SLA compliance and prepare deviation reports

I. Process Improvement Projects

 

  • Identify and implement improvements in recovery, reuse, and efficiency
  • Support debottlenecking, pilot trials, and technology upgrades

J. Process Documentation

 

  • Develop and maintain SOPs, OCPs, process flow diagrams, startup/shutdown procedures
  • Maintain process logs, trends, and performance reports

K. Client Coordination & Technical Support

 

  • Participate in review meetings and present technical insights
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (Operations, Lab, Mechanical, E&I, OEMs)
  • Deliver performance, RCA, and improvement reports

L. Safety, Environmental & Statutory Compliance

 

  • Ensure compliance with CPCB/SPCB norms, environmental regulations, and safety standards
  • Promote safe chemical handling and sustainable operations

M. Digital Monitoring & Reporting (SCADA Focus)

 

  • Work extensively with PLC, SCADA, DCS, and Historian systems
  • Develop dashboards, KPI tracking, trend analysis, and MIS reports
  • Utilize tools like Excel, Power BI, ERP systems for reporting and analytics.

 

Requirements :

Qualifications - Essential: B.E./B.Tech in Chemical / Environmental / Biotechnology Engineering

                         Preferred: M.Tech in Environmental Engineering / Certification in Water Treatment / Six Sigma Green Belt

Experience - 3–8 years in process engineering within water/wastewater treatment

Preferred Industry Exposure - Semiconductor / Pharmaceuticals / Chemicals / Petrochemicals / Solar Manufacturing / Power Plants / Industrial Water & Wastewater Utilities

Technical Competencies :

Process Expertise: ETP, STP, MBR, MBBR, SBR, DAF, UF, RO, EDI, ZLD, MEE, ATFD, UPW

Engineering Skills: Mass & heat balance, chemical dosing, hydraulic calculations, RCA/CAPA

Laboratory Knowledge: APHA methods, jar testing, water chemistry, microbiology basics

Automation & SCADA: PLC/SCADA fundamentals, instrumentation basics, trend analysis
